The Power-Gamer’s Lament

Posted on by NightOwl Posted in Pesky Players | Leave a comment

Forgive me Father, for I was prideful. Forgive me Father, for I was greedy. Forgive me Father, for I have power-gamed.

As everyone’s favorite Hollywood devil, Al Pacino, put it, “Vanity, definitely, my favorite sin.”  The GM isn’t guilty of this insidious sin, so who is? Who, me? No, of course not. Well…maybe a little bit. However, there’s a difference between taking pride in your work, and power-gaming. There’s a difference between being clever, and abusing a flaw in the gaming system you’re using.

Rolling for Lulz: Napalm the Boring out of your Campaign (1 of 2)

Boredom

Tell me if this has ever happened to you: you’re in a campaign with a knowledgeable and crafty DM. Your fellow players are all extremely cooperative and each possess something valuable to bring to the table, both literally and figuratively. The campaign you’re trotting along through, though challenging at times, is flowing along at a steady pace and your adventure party has yet to even see one of your teammates get bloodied, let alone fall near death.

And then, suddenly, you die IRL of sheer, unadulterated boredom.

Unfortunately, “Death by Boredom” tragedies are nothing new to the gaming world. And the worst thing about them is that they are completely, 100% preventable. Read more

Backroom Chat Recap: October 13

Posted on by Ophelia Posted in Backroom Chat | Leave a comment

It’s that time again–time for another Beautiful Brains Back Room Chat Room Recap! This is the public chat room that BeautifulBrainsOnline.com hosts on their website.  If you want to join in, all you have to do is go to the website at 9pm (Eastern Time) Thursday night.  Folks that want to hang out with gaming industry guests stop by for an hour and chat.  At the end, Beautiful Brains raffles off free shipping to their online store.

This week, Kurt “Telas” Schneider, Patrick Benson and John Arcadia of Gnome Stew stopped by to hang out, goof around, and give out some free promo copies of their two books, Masks and Eureka.  Both have been out for a while, but they’re very popular resources for GMs.  Masks provides 1000 npcs that can be used in any game system.  Eureka provides 501 plot hooks in 22 different genres and sub-genres that are also designed to be used in any system.   Most of the talk (that wasn’t about chainsaw wielding polar bears) was about Eureka and how convenient the book can be when you’re running a convention game.  There was also praise for the searchable indexes and the quality of the plots. If you’re looking for more information or to purchase the books you can find them at the Beautiful Brains Store .

Check in with BeautifulBrainsOnline.com next week when they talk about Con on the Cob!

Dracula Dead and Loving It

Let’s face it, when it comes to tabletop games, Dungeons and Dragons is the gateway drug. If you haven’t played some edition of D&D, it’s quite possible that you’re some sort of extra-dimensional being, in which case you should probably stop procrastinating and get to work finding a portal back to your own dimension. All kidding aside, tons of people start their gaming career with D&D.  Some people never leave that bubble, but for the rest of us, making the transition to other games can be quite an adventure. Choosing Last Names for Characters

Sometimes a good last name can save your characters life

So you may have decided to bump your character up from red shirt to yellow shirt by giving him or her a last name.  However, finding a good last name for your character can be harder than it looks.

It’s easy to give characters first names. Every day thousands of babies are born and given first names, so resources exist everywhere to help people find them.  Those looking for surnames are usually either writers, gamers or genealogists and often times genealogists know the surname they want to research before they start.  This can make it hard to find a good last name for your character.  You don’t always need a last name, but if you decide you want one, there are still resources out there if you know where to look. Growing Up Gamer

Posted on by Keavy Posted in Pesky Players, Roleplaying Games | 1 Comment

There’s been a lot of talk on this site about coming out as a gamer, embracing your inner geek, and subverting stereotypes.  Lethea has had more than her share of issues with it. The thing is, I’ve never had to do that. I’ve always been a geek. I learned to read in a MUD called Dragon Realms – I used to sit with my father and watched him type while I ate breakfast. I knew the story and the characters and several of the players – my godfather, aunt and uncle played in addition to my dad.  So for me, there was never a need to come out because it was something that was always there. I’m twenty four and I’ve never known anything but gaming. Read more

Gaming Under Adverse Weather and Other Serious Conditions

I’ve recently survived both Hurricane Irene and a completely separate, unrelated 2” deep basement flood. After having successfully survived these brushes with death moistness, it got me thinking: sometimes, you don’t get to game under sunny skies with Disney bluebirds singing in the trees and fluffy squirrels begging you for scraps like fuzzy, adorable homeless people.

Sometimes, the skies grow dark. The winds begin to howl. The thunder rolls, and the lightning strikes. Sometimes, you have to game under less-than-ideal conditions. And for your benefit, I have compiled a handy gamer survival guide for dealing with the most extreme of gaming-unfriendly weather conditions. Don’t let Mother Nature pwn your next gaming session!
