The Dungeons and Dragons virtual tabletop had been in Beta since November 2010. This virtual tabletop was being developed by Wizards of the Coast (WotC) and while it seemed like the product would be focused on 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons, WotC purported that any game system would work well within the software. In 2012 WotC decided to cancel production of the Virtual Tabletop so it will not be coming out of beta.
Later that year, owners of Game Table Online, were able to convince WotC to let them use the D&D virtual table system. The system is now hosted at RPGTableOnline. The only caveat is that they are not allowed to label it as an “Official D&D product.” In order to play players must register their account with Game Table Online, but the system itself is entirely free to use. It is unclear whether WotC will attempt to create a new virtual tabletop after the release of DnD Next, but for now they are effectively out of the Virtual Tabletop business.
