Open RPG was started in the year 2000 by Chris Davis. The software is currently open source and is distributed under the GNU/GPL license. There are currently two major versions of Open RPG, the standard edition and Traipse. Both of these versions offer many of the same features such as layered maps, dice rollers, and integrated chat software. Like many other virtual tabletops Traipse and Open RPG are both system neutral, so you can run just about any type of game on them.
Many consider the Traipse virtual tabletop to be the next evolution of the Open RPG software, despite the different name. It boasts many of the above features and more features are currently in development. The hope is to give Open RPG more features, while making it easier to use.
